Since Davis proposed the "variable resistance microphone theory" on the transducer mechanism of the cochlea, about a quarter of a century has elapsed and there has been no fundamental ob-jection to the theory until the present. The mechanism, however, has been understood in more detail from the experimental evidences collected in recent years. For these few years the intracellular potentials of hair cells in guinea pig's cochleae were identified by means of a marking technique and the membrane properties of receptor cells became to be explored in a molecular level.
