  • Look Inside

We present a 1-year and 11-month old infant who was suspected of a profound hearing loss.

Behavioral observation audiometry (BOA) and auditory brain-stem response (ABR) showed no response. Conditioned orientation reflex audiometry (COR) showed a slight response. The head rightingreflex was observed with the eyes open and was absent with the eyes closed. CT scan and reconstruc-tion MRI demonstrated a hypoplastic cochlea and an enlarged vestibule in the right inner ear (Mon-dini type) and a fused cochlea and vestibule in the left inner ear. The damped rotation test for ves-tibulo-ocular reflex demonstrated the hypoactive labyrinth. The other twin brother had normal hear-ing and normal vestibular function. Development of balance in this case and the other was slightly different probably because of the central compensa-tion.
