Abstract

Several lines of evidence suggest that micro-tubules are involved in various kinds of cell motility, such as axonal transport, chromosomal movement, hormone secretion, motility of cilia and flagella. These processes may require the energy supply through hydrolysis of ATP. It was already established that the motility of cilia and flagella depends on the presence of a ATPase (dynein) in the outerdoublet microtubules. However, it is not still clear whether cytoplasmic microtubules contain a unique ATPase. Recently, there have appeared several reports which suggest the presence of a ATPase in brain microtubules.
