 According to Greenfield and Bosanquet6), "grumose degeneration" or "degenerescence grumeleuse" was firstly introduced into medical terms by Tretiakoff34) in 1919. Ile originally intended to describe saccular structures containing lipochrome granules and claimed that this was one of characteristic degeneration patterns of melanin containing neurons. Later, in 1969, Anzil1)applied this term to inflated neurons appeared in the degenerated dentate nucleus of progressive supranuclear palsy.
