Abstract

Myelin membrane is markedly different from a type of plasma membrane, although it is originally an extension of either oligodendroglial cell or the Schwann cell plasma membrane. In contrast to the large number of protein components in the plasma membrane, myelin has only several major proteins. Fig. 1 shows SDS gel electrophoresis patterns of myelin proteins in human central and peripheral nervous system. The two major protein components of central nerve myelin are the Folch type proteolipid (PLP, Molecular Weight 20~23 K) and the basic protein (BP, M.W. 18K).
