  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Myelin is a multilamellar structure made of plasma membranes of the myelin forming cells, oligodendrocytes in central nervous system (CNS) and Schwann cells in peripheral nervous system (PNS). It attracts attentions because of its advantage as a good material for studying biological membranes and demyelinating diseases. In this review article, I focused on following topics : 1) classification and structures of myelin proteins, 2) comparative physiological chemistry of myelin proteins, 3) myelin glycoproteins as immunoglobulin superfamily, 4) roles of cell adhesion molecules in myelin formation, 5) analysis of roles of myelin proteins by cDNA transfection, 6) myelin proteins and autoimmune demyelinating disease and 7) myelin glycoprotein and polyneuropathy.
