 The usefulness and limitations of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and experimental allergic neuritis (EAN) as animal models for the human demyelinating diseases are discussed with regards to multiple sclerosis (MS) and Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome, respectively.

 Extensive immunochemical analysis has been performed on myelin basic protein (MBP) as EAE antigen. Thus, complete amino acid sequence, EAE-inducing sites, delayed type hypersensitivity-related sites and antibody production-related sites have been identified on MBP molecules by several workers.
