  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Since the first report of acute purulent meningoencephalitis caused by free-living amoeba such as acanthamoeba by Fowler and Carter in 1965 and a proposal of the name of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis by Butt in 1966, primary amoebic meningoencephalitis has become to be accepted generally as an independent disease. More than 90 cases have been reported from various countries and now it is quite common disease all over the world, especially subtropical and temperate zones. However, no case has been found so far in Japan.
