Mechanism of tracking eye movements

　動く視覚刺激にたいする眼球の追跡運動は刺激が視野の周辺に現われた場合，まず中心窩をその方向へ向ける視線固定反射（fixation reflex）に始まる^2,3）。それに続いて刺激がさらに動いているならば，中心窩に結んだ像が外れないように眼球を追随させる運動（tracking eyemovement，following movement）が継続するわけである^49）。対象の動きが激しく，また不規則であれば両者が交互に働くことになる。

　視線固定反射は，新しい刺激にたいして動物が眼だけでなく，頭や体幹を向け，また音を伴う場合聞き耳を立てる生まれつき備わった見当づけ反射（orientation reflex，定位反射ともいう）の一部をなすと考えることができる。近年の研究はそのような総合活動機構の分析にも向けられているが本稿ではふれない。

Tracking eye movements to a moving object consist of an initial fixation reflex (saccadic movements) which grasps the object in the central foveal area, and then more or less continuousfollowing movements to keep the image of the object in the fovea. The following movements are saccadic at least at the beginning. However, it can be modified to the smooth pursuit movements within the limits of certain conditions: regularity and smoothness of the movements, low velocity etc.
