The physiological functions of the gene products of causative genes for polyglutamine diseases remain to be determined, except for the androgen receptor (spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy), the αlA voltage-depended calcium channel (spinocerebellar ataxia type 6) and TATA-binding protein (spinocerebellar ataxia type 17). Elucidation of physiological functions of the gene products are essential not only to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the diseases but also to develop new therapeutic approaches for these polyglutamine diseases.
