  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The cerebellar cortex has the stereotypical laminar organization with its limited number of input and output lines, and only several major classes of neurons. Synaptic connections between Purkinje cells and granule neurons, based upon close positioning of these neurons, are a “life line” of the cerebellar electrical function.

Purkinje cells are generated early in the embryonic period at the ventricular zone ; while granule neurons are continuously produced until the second postnatal week by their precursors which originate from the germinal trigon and spread over the cerebellar surface.
