  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

On the basis of clinical criteria, an atypical neuroleptic is defined as a drug that has efficacy in treating both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, has a low propensity to cause extrapyramidal side effects and tardive dyskinesia, and causes a small elevation of serum prolactin levels. It is likely that no single hypothesis explains why a particular drug behaves as an atypical neuroleptic.
