Several lines of evidences have shown the new roles of neurotrophins which involved in neural transmission and succeeding activity-dependent plasticity of synapses in addition to their “classical” neurotrophic action in the regulation of the differentiation and survival of neurons. Here we discuss : 1) acute, 2) intermediate and 3) chronic effects of neurotrophins on neural transmission and their molecular backgrounds. Neurotrophins induces and enhances excitatory neurotransmission by modulating pre-and post-synaptic mechanisms in an acute and a chronic phase.
