  • Look Inside

A fundamental question in vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) development is how the great diversity of neurons and glial cells is derived from an apparently homogeneous neuroepithelial cell population in the embryonic neural tube. This paper describes a series of experiments designed to understand this cellular diversification process by using the neural retina, an easily accessible part of the CNS. The development of a specialized neuronal cell, the rod photoreceptor cell (rods), was studied.
