  • Look Inside

In the cerebellum of adult animals, each Purkinje cell is innervated by a single climbing fiber that originates from the inferior olive of the medulla and supplies a strong excitatory synapse onto proximal dendrites of Purkinje cells. On the other hand, each Purkinje cell is innervated by multiple climbing fibers at early developmental stages. In rodents, massive elimination of climbing fiber synapses has been shown to occur postnatally, and the adult-type mono innervation pattern is established on around postnatal day 20 (P20).
