For rapid eye movements such as saccades and quick phases of nystagmus, ocular motoneurons of the agonist muscle exhibit a burst of spikes and those of the antagonist cease or decrease spike discharges. These changes in motoneuronal activity are caused by inputs from burst neurons that exhibit a burst discharge in association with rapid eye movements. Burst neurons are direction specific, and the burst contains appropriate information about parameters of on-direction component of rapid eye movements.
