One of the major goals of developmental neurobiology is to elucidate the molecular mechanism of selective synapse formation. In the neuromuscular system in the chick embryo, predetermined motoneu-rons selectively innervate unique target muscles by the process of selective axonal growth along the nonspecific highway. This review focuses primary on the recent advances of chick motoneuron differen-tiation, axonal guidance, and Drosophila motoneuron projection. The Drosophila motoneurons have the very similar mechanisms with those of chick embryo in the motoneuron path finding.
