LIM/homeobox genes in the zebrafish neural differentiation

はじめに

　脳は，異なった個性を持つ高度に多様な神経細胞の集まりであると，しばしば言われる。

　個々の神経細胞の個性（identity）は，細胞体の位置と形，樹状突起の形状，軸索の走行，軸索が支配する細胞の種類，などの様々な要素によって規定される。これら神経細胞の個性は，神経細胞が生まれると同時に，一度に決まってしまうのではなく，誕生後しばらくの間に多段的に決定されることが明らかになっている^1,2）。

LIM/homeodomain transcription factors play important roles in cell fate determination during development in vertebrates and invertebrates. We have cloned cDNAs for two different subfamilies (Islet-1 and apterous/LH2) of these factors in zebrafish and characterized their roles in the neural differentiation in embryonic zebrafish. Islet-1 is a LIM domain/homeodomain-type transcription regulator originally identified as an insulin gene enhancer binding protein. Islet-1 is considered to be involved in the differentiation of the neuronal cells.
