Tau is a microtubule-associated protein which is considered to exist mainly in axons and stabilizemicrotubule in vivo. This protein has been highlighted in the field of neuropathology since it wasidentified as the major component of neurofibrillary tangles that accumulate in the brain affectedAlzheimer's disease.

The tau gene was cloned for the first time from mouse brain cDNA・library. Two isoforms, 10ng andshort terminal isoforms, were obtained. They differ from each other only in carboxy-terminal region.
