  • Look Inside

Respiration is one of the most basic rhythm of life. The neural mechanisms responsible for the respiratory rhythm reside within the medulla, where there are various types of respiratory neurons, defined as neurons which fire in synchrony with respiration. This article reviews what kinds of respira-tory neurons are found in the medulla and how these respiratory neurons are classified based on their locations, firing patterns, input-output organizations, and functional roles.
