1）網膜・視覚伝導路における機能分化―ネコ網膜Y，X，W型神経節細胞における軸索再生能の違い

Morphological and physiological study on retinal ganglion cells that regenerated their axons into peripheral nerve graft in adult cats.

はじめに

　哺乳動物の視覚系は，網膜-外側膝状体-有線領経路（Retino-geniculo-striate pathway）が他の脊椎動物と比較してよく発達しているのが特徴である。この経路は膝状体系（Geniculate system）とも呼ばれ，食肉目と霊長目でその発達がとくに著しい。このためこれらの動物では膝状体系視覚路の中継核である外側膝状体（Lateral geniculate nucleus）の層構造が明瞭で，たとえばネコではA，A1，Cの3層，サルでは1～6層が形成されている。そしてそれぞれの層に投射している網膜神経節細胞^注1（Retinal ganglion cells）が，形態的にも機能的にも分化して特徴のある細胞のタイプを形成している。

　網膜神経節細胞の形態や機能がどのように分化しているのか，また形態と機能の問にどのような相関があるのか，についてこれまで多くの研究がなされてきた。本稿では，はじめにネコとサルの網膜神経節細胞の形態と生理的機能の分化について最近の研究を概観し，次にネコの視神経の再生に関する私たちの最近の研究成果を紹介して，網膜神経節細胞の軸索再生能の違いという新しい視点から見た機能分化について考察する。

　Axotomized retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of cats can regenerate their axons into autologous peripheral nerve grafts apposed to the optic nerve stump. Two months later RGCs that had regenerated their axons were retrogradely labeled with fluorescent dye injected into the graft. Approximately 5,000 labeled cells were distributed in a high density area elongating horizontally, in a pattern similar to that observed in the intact retina.

　The dendritic morphology of RGCs with regenerated axons was examined after intracellular injections of HRP or Lucifer yellow in in vitro preparations.
