  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Understandings of the functional neuronal circuitry in mammalian retinas have been greatly advanced in recent years due to various technical advancements in immunohistochemistry, patch clamp recording intracellular dye injection and neuropharmacology. On the other hand, multiple visual cortical areas have been discovered in higher mammals and shown to process different aspects of visual informations such as color, shape and movement. Single cells in such multiple visual cortical areas appear to receive different visual inputs from relay cells of different laminae of the lateral geniculate nucleus and these relay cells in turn receive inputs from different classes of ganglion cells. Thus, parallel processing of the visual information from the retina to the visual cortex has been proposed and how the functional diversity of ganglion cells emerges in the retina has become an important issue. In this article we made a mini-review on the following three recent topics concerning the functional neural circuitry in mammalian retinas: rod pathway, ON/OFF parallel pathway, and movement detection.
