  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The mandibular muscles are mainly composed of three different muscle fiber types, I, IIa and IIb classified by the techniques based on histochemical staining of mitochondrial and contractile enzymes, as in other skeletal muscles. However, the jaw-closing muscles of carnivora and primates are unique in having an unusual muscle fiber type called IIM fiber, which has high oxidative and glycolytic activities, being identified by the antibody reactions to isomyosins of contractile proteins (i.e., immunochemical studies) together with the traditional histochemical techniques.
