Astrocyte and GIF.

はじめに

　成長抑制因子（GIF）は，神経栄養因子活性を抑えるメタロチオネイン様の蛋白で，当初，その活性が正常老人脳にあって，アルツハイマー病脳にはない物質として同定された^12-14）。そして，GIFは肝や腎，骨格筋には分布せず，中枢神経系にのみ分布すること^11,15），免疫組織化学的にはアストロサイトに分布すること^14），さらに，アルツハイマー病脳で抑制活性がなくなるのは，GIFのdown-regulationが起きていることも^11,14）わかっている。本稿では，GIF蛋白の性質，GIFがどのようなアストロサイトに分布するのか，また，アルツハイマー病などでなぜdown-regulationされているのかについて述べる。

Growth inhibitory factor (GIF), one of the growth inhibitory factors found in the normal aged brain but not in Alzheimer's disease brain, is a 68 amino acid metallothionein-like protein. GIF is expressed in central nervous system but not peripheral tissues, such as liver, kidney, spleen, skeletal muscle and testis. GIF is localized in the subset of astrocytes. The immunocytochemical localization of GIF is reciprocal to that of GFAP.
