  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

How the prefrontal area (cortex) or the prefrontal association area (cortex), located most rostrally in the frontal lobe of the neocortex, is involved in the initiating the behavior was reviewed mostly from viewpoints obtained from recent studies.

A traditional view that the prefrontal cortex is the highest center of the brain was advocated in terms of the evolutional trends, anatomical connections and lesion studies of various brain areas of both humans and monkeys. A circuitry was proposed how the activity related to behavioral initiation, originating in the prefrontal cortex, is transmitted eventually to the motor area of the frontal lobe. In this scheme, area 46 (Walker) is the highest, anatomo-hierarchically, physiologically and evolutionally.
