行動セットとは，われわれがこれから起こす行動のプログラムをあらかじめ脳の中に組み立てておき，実際に行動を起こすまでこれを持続的に保持している状態のことである。この間の脳活動はその行動方略特異的なものである。機能画像を用いた研究により，前頭葉内の前方と後方領域が行動特異的な機能的結合関係を保っていることが明らかになった。これからとるべき行動様式に応じて，前頭葉は柔軟にその機能的結合の重み付けを変えていく。ヒトが遠い目標に向かって計画を立てていくことができるのは，行動に必要な情報を統合し，行動セットを前向性にcodingできる前頭葉機能によると考えられる。

A task set is a neurocognitive state where an upcoming task is prospectively configured. Here the pattern of neural activity is specific to not just which task items to process but rather how to process the items. A recent functional neuroimaging study has shown that the patterns of interactions within the anterior and posterior prefrontal areas change flexibly according to what kinds of task to be performed. The capability of planning multiple goals in the future depends on the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, which integrates multiple pieces of information necessary for behavior and prospectively codes the task set.
