  • Look Inside

The neurofilaments (NF) is a major intermediate filament expressed in neuronal cells. NFs are constituted of three subunit proteins-200K (NF-H), 150K (NF-M) and 70K (NF-L). NF sub-unit proteins are composed of three domains-the amino (N)-terminal tail, the α-helix rich central rod and the carboxy (C)-terminal tail domains. The difference in the molecular weight of NF subunit proteins is due to the length of the C-terminal tail domain. NF-M and NF-H have a longer tail domain than NF-L. The C-terminal tail domains of NF-M and NF-H are shown to be projecting outside from core filaments. They have been suspected to interact with other NFs or cytoplasmic organ-elles.
