  • Look Inside

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is an etiological agent of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), and is also closely related to chronic progressive myelopathy, termed HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP). It remains unknown how HTLV-I infection relates to the pathogenesis of the myelopathy. However, there are several lines of evidence indicating that immunological mechanisms are probably involved in the pathogenesis of this dicrease. We reviewed several immunological abnormalities observed in the patients, which may be relevant to the pathogenesis of HAM/TSP,

 1) There are polyclonal increases in serum immunoglobulins (IgG and IgA) in patients with HAM/TSP. In CSF, IgG content and IgG index are increased and oligoclonal bands are frequently observed in patients.
