  • Look Inside

The nationwide survey of HAM in Japan had been carried out in 1986-1988. Through this survey, we obtained 432 cases with definite HAM and 94 cases with probable HAM. The diagnostic criteria for HAM as specified are: (1) slowly progressive spastic paraparesis with or without other neurological manifestations; (2) positive antibody to HTLV-I in both serum and CSF; and (3) exclusion of other similar neurological disorders. The male to female ratio of patients with definite HAM was 1:2.5 and their ages ranged from 11 to 80 years (mean: 52.9 years). These cases had a mean age of onset of 41 years (ranged from 5 to 80 years). A history of blood transfusion was obtained in 109 cases (25.2% of definite HAM cases). In the study about blood transfusion, we obtained the very important result that no HAM cases with a history of blood transfusion supplied by blood bank was reported after the blood supply screening started.
