High frequency electrical stimulation (tetanic) of afferent fiber (s) of certain neurons results in sustained potentiation of synaptic transmission efficacy, which is called long term potentiation (LTP). This phenomenon is thought to be the molecular basis for learning and memory, however, this type of stimulation is not physiological and rarely occurs in living brain.

A bee venom, mast cell degranulating peptide (MCD), which induces long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission in hippocampus slices, was found to possess multiple functions.
