  • Look Inside

The recent revolution in the nuclear medicine open the new era on the diagnosis and the investigation of pathophysiological mechanisms of the dementing disorders. In this article, we summarized the compiled results on the dementia derived from the positron emission tomography (PET) examination and presented our studies.

1. Alzheimer's disease

The most important contribution by PET on the dementing disorders was the discovery of the specific metabolic derangement in Alzheimer's disease. The parietal and temporal lobe hypometabolism was conspicuous in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease in particular when examined by glucose metabolism. This finding is useful in clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease because formally we relied on the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease to the pathological findings such as senile plaque and Alzheimer's neurofibrillary tangle.
