  • Abstract

A 59-year-old male diabetic patient with end-stage renal disease undergoing CAPD received acetazolamide for elevated intraocular pressure after surgery for vitreous hemorrhage. He lost consciousness after taking acetazolamide (0.75g/day) for 9 days. There was no finding of cerebro-vascular disease, electrolyte imbalance and severe liver dysfunction, however the electroencephalograms and brain wave demonstrated metabolic encephalopathy. Serum concentration of acetazolamide was 54 μg/ml suggesting acetazolamide cause consciousness disorder.
