  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Pigmented nonfunctional adenomas of the adrenal gland are frequently found at autopsy but functional black adenomas are rare. We reported two cases of functioning black adenoma of the adrenal gland that produced the characteristic clinical and laboratory findings of Cushing's syndrome.

Both the electromicroscopical findings and positive stains with PAS, oil red O, schmorl identified the pigmented granules as lipofuscin, although the source of the lipofuscin and mechanisms underlying the increase of this material is unknown.
