  • Look Inside

For cases of fungus infection among technicians in one laboratory in Tokyo from infection of T. mentagrophytes of rats of Wister strain were reported.

The lesions of the animals were reddish macules with slight scale and loss of hair. Alopecia started one month after keeping the rats in the animal room. It was found more frequently in the group of animals which were kept in 36 days in the animal room than the 29- and 49-days' group. T. mentagrophytes (type asteroides) was identified both from diseased and from normal hairs.

Six cases of tinea among technicians who treated the animals were found. The lesions occupied the face, the patellar region, especially hands and forearms. The lesions were erythemato-squamous plaques on the flexor surface of fingers and hands, and tinea circinata-type on the other parts of the body.

Mycologic study identified the same fungus in 4 of 6 cases as that from the animals.
