  • Look Inside

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was performed in 14 patients with sialolithiasis, 13 stones in the submandibular gland and one in the parotid gland. In 5 patients, fragmented calculi were excreted completely. In 3 patients fragmented cal-culi were excreted partially but symptoms were disappeared. Two patients required surgerical removal of the submandibular glands. The excre-tion of stones was affected by the secretory function of the salivary gland estimated by ultrasonography and scintiphotography.

ESWL for salivary gland stones is noninvasive and can be performed on outpatient basis, and has a considerably high success rate.
