Small cell carcinoma is known to occur in tissues other than the lungs but rarely in the head and neck. We report two cases of small cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
A woman in her 70 s was diagnosed with a tumor of the nasolacrimal duct on magnetic resonance imaging.
The tumor was diagnosed as a small cell carcinoma based on biopsy findings, and distant or lymph node metastases were not detected.
A man in his 70 s was diagnosed with a tumor involving the cheek on ultrasonography.
The tumor was diagnosed as a small cell carcinoma based on biopsy findings, and distant or lymph node metastases were not detected.
Both patients were administered chemoradiotherapy using CDDP(80 mg/m2)and VP-16(100 mg/m2), which resulted in remission within 2 months.
Although no established treatment is available for small cell carcinoma of the head and neck, treatment is usually administered based on the guidelines used for management of small cell lung cancer.
