Epidemic parotitis is an infectious disease caused by the mumps virus. It is mainly seen in childhood and causes swelling of the parotid gland, pain, and fever. Complications such as sensorineural hearing loss, meningitis, and orchitis may occur, but laryngopharyngeal edema is rare. We report a case of mumps with laryngopharyngeal edema and dyspnea. An 26-year old woman presented to our hospital with dyspnea, swelling, and pain in the submandibular and subaural regions. Endoscopic examination showed significant laryngopharyngeal edema and airway narrowing. We decided to secure the airway by oral intubation. The patient was admitted to the hospital and treatment with intravenous steroids was started. The diagnosis of mumps was confirmed by an elevated serum antibody titer. In this report, we describe a case of laryngeal edema and dyspnea associated with mumps virus infection, including a discussion of the literature.
