  • Look Inside

In one family through 6 generations, 2 patients with bilateral acoustic tumors, 6 patients with bilateral deafness, and one patient with dizziness and hearing loss were reported. As all patients showed no skin lesion, von Recklinghausen's disease was ruled out. This familial occurrence of bilateral acoustic tumors is thought to due to an autosomal dominant mutation. In the previously reported families with bilateral acoustic tumors men and women were equally affected. But in this family, affected members were all women except for one man. The presented family was grossly similar to the report of familial bilateral acoustic neurofibromas reported by Gardner and Frazier in 1930.
