We evaluated 13 eyes in 11 patients who under-went secondary implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lens after prior extracapsular cataract extraction. The age of patients averaged 67.7 years. The interval between the two surgeries averaged 27 months. Contact lens intolerance was the most common cause of secondary implantation and ac-counted for 55% of all cases. The incidence of complications during and after surgery was lower than simultaneous extraction of cataract and intraocular lens implantation. Visual acuity recovered to 20/25 or better 4 days after surgery in 9 out of the 13 eyes (69%). The corneal endothelial cell density decreased by 4.7% in the present group as compared to 8.2% in eyes with simultaneous cataract extraction and intraocular lens implanta-tion.
