  • Look Inside

The natural course of age-related macular degen-eration (AMD) with subfoveal neovascular mem-brane (SFNVM) has a very poor visual prognosis. In this study, krypton or dye laser photocoagula-tion (576nm-630nm, 647nm) which included the entire foveal avascular zone was applied to untreat-ed and active SFNVM in 16 eyes of 16 patients. All eyes met our eligibility criteria which include a visual aquity of 20/200 or worse, a neovascular membrane less than or equal to 2 disc diameter insize, and presence of serous detachment of sensory retina.

In 12 of 16 treated eyes (75%), SFNVM disappe-ared. The visual acuities of 15 eyes (93.7%) remained the same or improved for an average of 17 months while only one eyes (6.3%) lost two lines. Laser photocoagulation for AMD with active SFNVM may he useful in selected cases with poor visual aquity (20/200 or wovse), small neovascular membranes and serous detachment of sensory ret-ina.
