We performed phacoemulsification and intraouclar lens (IOL) implantation for cataract and/or uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes with closed-angle glaucoma. The series comprised 19 eyes of 16 patients. Laser iridotomy had been performed 18 eyes and peripheral iridectomy on 1 eye before. The eyes were followed up for 3 to 36 months, average 7.1±12.9 months. The IOL ranged from 7 to 38mmHg, av-erage 16.7±8.1mmHg before surgery and 7 to 19mmHg, average 13.8±3.4mmHg 3 months after surgery. The IOL was thus controlled below 20mmHg in all the eyes. The visual acuity improved by 2 lines or more18eyes (95%). There was no case with decreased visual acuity. The corneal endothelial cells averaged 2,420±508/mm2 before surgery and decreased by 18.4±17.9% to 1,942±652/mm2 after surgery. The find-ings show that phacoemulsification with IOL implantation is effective for closed-angle glaucoma and cataract after release of pupillary block.
