  • Look Inside

We evaluated the actual state of resistered visually impaired persons from the viewpoint of vitre-ous surgeons. The series comprised 70 cases seen during the past 6 years in our Department. There were 31 males and 39 female. Their ages averaged 51 years. The major causative lesions were diabetic retinopathy 22 cases (31%), high myopia 10 cases (14%) , retinitis pigmentosa 7 cases (10%), glaucoma 5 cases (7%), followed by 4 cases each (6%) of corneal lesions, uveitis, age-related macular degeneration and optic neu-ropathies. Out of 22 cases of diabetic retinopathy, there was a history of vitreous surgery at least in one eye in 13 cases (60%). The findings show that fundus diseases are leading causes of severe visual impairment and that more preventive and therapeutic measures are necessary by our Department which is specialized in vitreoretinal diseases.
