検眼鏡の発明

Invention of an ophthalmoscope by Helmholtz

　直像検眼鏡が1851年にヘルムホルツにより発明された。これにより，生体眼での眼底観察が可能になり，以後10年間にさまざまな眼底疾患が発見されることになる。この検眼鏡についての原著の記述を紹介するとともに，この発明で眼科学が医学の専門分野として独立する契機になったことを記述する。

A direct ophthalmoscope was invented by Helmholtz in 1851. This instrument enabled observation of the fundus in the living eye and led to a series of new identification of various fundus disorders. This paper describes the construction and use of this ophthalmoscope with a discussion on its influence on ophthalmology during the ensuing period. The invention of ophthalmoscope also served as an initiative for ophthalmology to become independent from general surgery.
