Standard optotypes used for visual acuity testing, including Landolt rings, have a directional factor. Landolt rings at one visual acuity level, in which the rings are of the same size, the threshold of discrimination varies with the direction of the break in the ring. This feature poses a problem particularly in testing astigmatic eyes. To overcome this problem, the author devised a new optotype which is free of directional factor. Each set of optotypes consists of 3 or 4 circles, of which one is a double circle and the other 2 or 3 are simple circles. They are arranged vertically and horizontally. The examinee is asked where the double circle is located. Preliminary clinical evaluation in 774 eyes has shown that the new optotypes give similar results as Landolt rings.
