  • Look Inside

We reviewed 78 eyes in 55 diabetic patients who underwent vitreous surgery for macular edema 2 years. The series comprised 32 males and 23 females. The ages ranged from 32 to 79 years, average 57.4 years. All the eyes had been treated by panretinal photocoagulation and no eye had posterior vitreous detachment at the time of surgery. After 6 months or longer following surgery, visual acuity of 0.7 or more was obtained in 29 eyes (37.2%). These eyes had significantly better visual acuity before surgery than the other 49 eyes which resulted in final visul acuity of less than 0.7 (p < 0.001). Eyes in the former group showed lesser hard exudates than the latter. The findings show that early vitreous surgery is indicated in order to obtain good visual acuity in eyes with diabetic macular edema.
