A total of 1,019 myopic eyes in 534 patients underwent excimer laser photorefractive surgery during a 14-month period Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was performed in 534 eyes and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in 393 eyes The age at the time of surgery averaged 34 years in both groups The patients' satisfaction was evaluated by a questionnaire method The interval between surgery and evaluation ranged 8 to 14 months in the PRK group and 1 to 7 months in the LASIK group Correction of refraction within±1 0 diopter of the intended value was obtained in more than 91% of eyes in the PRK group and in more than 98% in the LASIK group Response to the questionnaire was obtained from 308 cases (57.5%) The postoperative visual acuity was reported as meeting the expectation by 84% of the responders and 92% were satisified with the surgical outcome There was no negative response to photorefractive surgery More than one-half of responders were satisfied with the outcome of surgery and were grateful for the progress of medicine
