We reviewed 852 low-birthweight infants seen during the 14 years through 1998. Their birthweight ranged from 424 to 2,492 g, average 1,601 g. The gestational age ranged from 24 to 38 weeks, average 31.8 weeks. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was detected in 262 out of 852 cases (30.8%) , of which 71 cases (8.3%) required treatment. Specifically, treatment was performed in 14 out of 138 cases (10.1%) in 1985-87, in 28 out of 281 cases (10.0%) in 1988-91, in 22 out of 266 cases (8.3%) in 1992-95, and in 7 out of 167 cases (4.2%) in 1996-98. The outcome of treatment was favorable in 69 of the 71 cases (97%). One eye resulted in severe grade II cicatricial phase and another in grade V. In any groups, particularly in those with gestational age of shorter than 29 weeks and birth weight of less than 1,500g were higher incidence of ROP and became severe.
