Vitrectomy with membrane peeling was performed in 15 eyes of idiopathic epiretinal membrane. Each case was evaluated for visual acuity, foveal thickness and central retinal sensitivity before surgery and 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Foveal thickness was measured by a retinal thickness analyzer (Retina MapTM) Central retinal sensitivity was measured by Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer 630. Following surgery, visual acuity improved and foveal thickness decreased significantly (p < 0.05) but the central retinal sensitivity did not improve. The foveal thickness and central retinal sensitivity showed no correlation with the visual acuity during the immediate postoperative period and showed negative correlation later. Improvement in central retinal sensitivity was significantly better in 10 eyes which the internal limiting membrane (ILM) was left intact than in 5 eyes which underwent removal of ILM. There was no difference in improvement of visual acuity between the two groups.
