  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We treated two cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) with cytomegalovirus retinitis. Both were treated with systemic ganciclovir and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), a combination of protease inhibitor and reversed trascription enzyme inhibitor. Following this medication, the retinitis become inactive, CD4 lymphocyte count increased and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) load became undetectable. The retinitis remained inactive after discontinuation of systemic ganciclovir. This finding seemed to imply that HAART was effective in improving the immunological status and in regression of cytomegalovirus retinitis in both cases.
