We evaluated the outcome of visual acuity after surgery in 26 patients with open angle glaucoma. Each patient received trabeculectomy in one eye and trabeculotomy combined with sinusotomy in the other. The follow-up period averaged 25.7 months. The patients were aged 56.4 years in average. The visual acuity decreased more than 2 lines in 39% after 12 months and in 38% after 24 months after trabeculectomy. It decreased in 15% and 6% respectively after trabeculotomy combined with sinusotomy. In patients in whom the intraocular pressure was controlled below 14 mmHg after trabeculectomy and below 16 mmHg after trabeculotomy, the visual acuity decreased in 50% and 33% in the former group and in 21% and 13% in the latter at 12 and 24 months. The visual acuity tended to decrease after trabeculectomy and to remain fair after trabeculotomy combined with sinusotomy.
